Attention online English teachers What China’s new crackdown on regulations means for you Online English teaching forums and Facebook groups are buzzing with the news of regulations being implemented by the Chinese Education Ministry in January 2019. There have been talks of this for a while, but the current buzz was caused by a bunch of the bigger Chinese online teaching companies sending out memos to their current teachers. We’ve pulled together a quick guide to let you know what this means for you. We’ll be keeping it updated as the dust begins to settle and the impact of the changes becomes clearer. Okay first up - what do these memos mean for teachers already on Chinese online teaching platforms? If you haven’t heard from your platform yet, you probably will! If you do, here’s what some of the information on memos from companies like SayABC, VIPKID and DaDa stated: In response to the new regulations announced by the Chinese Ministry of Education, all online English teachers must meet the following requirements by December 31, 2018: Completed a 120-hour (online or in-person) TEFL course from a recognized institution. Uploaded copies of all relevant certification to the platform they teach on: Bachelor’s degree TEFL certification Criminal background check Basically, online platforms want to keep their teachers, so they are hoping their teachers will get the necessary qualifications in time for the big crackdown. It’s unclear how these regulations will be enforced. But the original memo does state that there will be a management platform that schools are answerable to. (Psst: Check out the press release that was featured on the Ministry of Education’s website as well as multiple other sites like the China Daily.) Which brings us to… The original memo - where is this all coming from? The actual memo from the Chinese Education Ministry was scant when it came to useful information for teachers and left things vague. Companies were given the actual regulations by the Ministry of Education ahead of the crackdown and so far most information is coming directly from the memos sent out by online platforms. The announcement means that companies catering to primary and middle school students will have to be accountable for any after-school program (on or offline) and this includes things like: the curriculum, qualifications of teachers, and hours available. For teachers already teaching online this may seem like it’s coming out of the blue. We feel you! But don’t worry - it’s not as bad as it seems. There’s still time to get TEFL certified and make sure you meet the regulations. With requirements changing, you will need the following to teach English online with most Chinese companies: A bachelor’s degree A 120-hour TEFL certificate from an accredited institution 2 years of teaching experience (and nope, a teaching practicum doesn’t cut it here!) Criminal background check So, what are online teachers saying about the crackdown? Here are just a few of the comments and concerns we’ve seen online from working online English teachers: “My school is giving teachers 3 weeks to do a 120-hour course. That seems a little crazy to me.” “I work for a great company in China. They told us the Chinese government is now requiring 120 or more hour TEFL certification from accredited and internationally-known companies. I have 15 years experience, a 40-hour TEFL certificate and a college degree. According to my company, the Chinese government will no longer accept just college degrees of experience, you must have a 120-hour TEFL certificate.” “I was told that there would be changes soon and that my credentials would be viewable for the students with my personal information partially blocked out, but not anything special about my certification. Fortunately, I completed a CELTA early in my career, so it’s not a problem either way.” “I have a master’s degree in TESOL and they still want that certificate. A copy of my degree is not enough.” Can I just get a cheapy TEFL and get this over with? Technically yes, but if you’ve any sense in your head - that will be a hard no! Most reputable TEFL courses will cost you around $1,000, and we don’t advise you to cut corners with this requirement, as it’s a short-term solution to a long-term problem. If you’re in a major hurry to get this sorted, go with an online course, as that’s the fastest option. With the government cracking down, we would recommend that working online teachers who’ve taken cheaper, shorter TEFL certificates in the past think about upgrading to one that will stand up to heavier scrutiny. That’s why we highly recommend that you go with a TEFL that’s been developed by an accredited education institution. For now, you might get away with, say, a Groupon cert, but if we were putting our money on it, we definitely wouldn’t want to take the risk. There are several different buffers, such as phosphoric acid, sulfate and ammonium ions, and there are also other kinds of buffers which are neutral buffers, ionic buffers, and chemical buffer kits.Buffer kits are available to purchase from many vendors and often come with free chemical buffers, all you have to do is to follow instructions for use. These kits normally include two chemicals, one neutral and one acidic. Neutral buffers are less than 50 percent Sulfate by volume, neutral buffers give a stronger acidic reaction, and acid buffers are more acidic than neutral. You will need to adjust the strength of your neutral or acid buffers according to the chemical reaction you are conducting.A buffer is important because it helps neutralize the reaction between two chemicals. It is also helpful in creating a reaction t hat is a combination of the two chemicals. The strong, but less acidic, buffer will reduce the reaction of the stronger but more acidic, one.Buffers are used in chemistry to separate and prepare various kinds of substances. For example, it is used in the separation of heavy metals like lead from oil, to make sure the solubility is low, to control the boiling point, to prevent the release of volatile organic compounds, and to determine the properties of solids. The molecular formula for an amine salt is CH2O3, for a trisaccharide is CH4CH2O1. Amines usually have a larger molecular mass than proteins, but the protein groups can be recovered from the salts.Binders are a type of buffer. They are extremely effective at binding. But they also are bound to carbon atoms by hydroxyl or carboxyl groups. Th ere are several types of buffers available. Three of them are amines, bromides, and esters.When you need a buffer in chemistry, the first thing you need to do is to find out the molecular formula of the chemical you are working with. When you have this information, add the appropriate quantity of the chemical to be buffered. So if you want a sodium bicarbonate buffer, make sure that you get sodium carbonate, and not sodium bicarbonate. You should also consider using an ionic buffer or ionic cleaning buffer if you don't want a strong sodium salt.

French Vocabulary 5 False Cognates to Watch Out For Megan L. Cognates are words that sound similar and can mean the same thing across different languages. However, in French, there are some tricky cognates that dont mean what you might think they mean. French tutor  Carol Beth L.  shares five common French false cognates Due to their similar roots, French and English share some vocabulary and grammar. La table is table, la geographie is geography, and un film is a film â€" otherwise known as a movie. Similar word pairs between two languages are known as cognates. Not all such similar words mean the same thing, however, so watch out, or some pairs may trick you! These false cognates â€" also known as “false friends” sound alike but dont actually mean the same thing. Here are a few notable examples. 1) Une librarie Would you normally expect to pay to use the books in une librarie? In France, yes. Une librarie is a bookstore, while a library is une bibliothèque. 2) Football Football sounds a lot like the American sport “football.” Like football, football is also in fact quite popular in France. But when the French play football, there are no yardage lines on the field, and the field goals have nets and no poles â€" because in fact the French word football actually refers to “soccer.” Our version of football is called le football américain, or American football. 3)  Attendre Attendre sounds like the English verb “to attend.” Logically, jattends le concert would mean “Im attending the concert,” right? Well, not quite. Attendre actually means to wait, so, jattends le concert  actually means “Im waiting for the concert.” So if attendre doesnt mean to attend, how do you say to attend in French? The French verb is assister. If you want to say you are attending the concert, say jassiste au concert. “But wait,” you say. “That sounds like the English verb to assist meaning to help.” Not quite. So then what about to assist or to help? This one actually makes some sense. The French verb is aider, and you can actually see the word “aid” (also meaning to help) in its root. Je taide dans ton jeu de football,  translates to “Ill help you in your soccer game.” 4)  Actuellement Actuellement, je fais mes devoirs. Of course youve probably guessed by now that this sentence doesnt mean youre actually doing your homework â€" except it kind of actually does, indirectly. This sentence quite simply says that youre doing your homework right now, because actuellement means currently or right now. After all, if youre doing them now, you are actually doing them, right? At any rate, both meanings make sense in many situations, so someone who doesnt realize the distinction might not catch on to their mistake in conversation. If you really want to say actually and truly that youre doing something, try using en faite (actually) or véritablement (really / truly). 5)  Blesser In French, blesser  means to wound or hurt someone, not to bless them. So be careful; if you want to look out for their physical and spiritual well-being, it might be wiser to ask a priest, rabbi, monk, or other spiritual leader for a bénédiction (a blessing). Or you can use the verb bénir (to bless) to express what youd like him to do. These are only a few examples, but nonetheless take heed! French can be easier than some languages because it has some similarities with English, but it can also be tricky. When in doubt, look it up, and dont let any of its false friends trick you! 2 Questions Every Songwriter Should Be Able to Answer Suzy S. Not sure where to start when it comes to writing songs? Check out these songwriting tips from Austin, TX teacher  Gfire M... I started writing songs fairly early on at age 11, but I never thought about songwriting technique until later, when I studied with teachers from Berklee College, and in Los Angeles and Nashville. I now have songs that have been played on more than 200 radio and television programs around the world, including UnderCurrents, a syndicated program that airs on more than 65 NPR radio stations in the United States. It was a natural progression to teach what I know about songwriting to my singing, piano, and guitar students who wanted to express themselves in an individual manner. Here are two questions to ask yourself before writing a song: 1. What is your song about? It is best if you can express the idea you want to convey in a single sentence. Songs are very short, averaging 3-5 minutes in length, so you really want to stay focused on one idea. Some examples are: “You and I will never, ever, ever, get back together,” “What doesnt kill you makes you stronger,” and “Your love lifts me higher and higher.” Write your sentence on the top of the page you are using to write your new song! 2. What song formula are you going to follow? If you study songs that you like, you will notice that there are formulas that a lot of songs follow. One common formula is verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus.   (Check out Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger” for an example of this formula.) So if we call the verse “A,” the chorus “B,” and the bridge “C,” the formula would be called A, B, A, B, C, B. Start with this formula for your first song all you really have to write is two verses, a chorus, and a bridge. Other Songwriting Tips to Consider If your first song isnt as good as the ones you hear on the radio, dont worry   it’s your first song! If you write a new song every month this year, you’ll have 12 songs and you will get better and better at really expressing what you want to say and developing your songwriting voice. You should also study your favorite bands and songwriters analyze the structure of your favorite songs and then practice writing a song that follows that same structure. Again, the more you practice writing songs and I do recommend completing each song, whether you think it is any good or not the more youll refine your technique. Find a Songwriting Teacher A teacher can give you even more songwriting tips as you work on your songs. Just as you would take months or years of singing, guitar, or piano lessons, if you book lessons with a good songwriting teacher and invest a minimum of three months of lessons and practical work (i.e. write and finish one song per month), you will get better much faster than if you are on your own. You already are a unique person with plenty of stories and experiences to share. Now give yourself the chance to be the songwriter you always dreamed of being!!
